Ferrous metals are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of air and water, a process that is accelerated by the presence of H2S, sulfides, and other contaminants. In order to protect the integrity of storage tanks and pipelines, most petroleum products are required to be non-corrosive to ferrous metals. Nalco Champion ferrous corrosion inhibitors are used to accomplish this, by forming a durable film at the surface of the metal to protect it from attack by corrosive species.

Ferrous (Pipeline) Corrosion Inhibitors
In fuel systems, steel piping and storage vessels can corrode and rust when both water and air contaminate the fuel. Water can contaminate fuel through refinery processes such as water washing, caustic processing, salt drying or through condensation of water from the air. Entrainment of air during pumping, mixing or blending operations can introduce oxygen that contributes to corrosion.
Nalco Champion provides corrosion inhibitors for protection of both ferrous metals used in automotive, industrial and commercial fuels, as well as corrosion inhibitors for specialized applications such as fuel transport pipelines, aviation gasoline, military and civil jet fuel, and ethanol.
The proper application of corrosion inhibitor into a fuel system is critical, and that process differs in new versus existing or aged systems. Knowing the acceptable rates of corrosion inhibitor permitted in specific applications and the best point in a process to treat fuel with corrosion inhibitor are also of critical importance. Contact your Nalco Champion sales rep for more information about treating your specific system.
